Multi-Organ in vitro organ-on-chip models for intestinal drug absorption and metabolism
Filed under: ADME, Drug absorption, and Drug metabolism

The drug development process is known to be inefficient and time-consuming, with only 1 in 10 drug candidates progressing through clinical trials, and to the market, due to unsuspected toxicity or lack of efficacy. Understanding the gut barrier permeability of new compounds and their subsequent metabolism is key to progress through the drug development pipeline.
This study demonstrates the potential of gut MPS to accurately assess intestinal absorption and a simple (monolayer) gut-liver MPS to combine drug absorption and drug metabolism in a single system.
