Overview
CN Bio, as a producer of laboratory equipment, is committed to responsible and reasonable product support such that our products have a useful working life and minimise strain on the natural resources of our planet.
While much of the biologically contaminated plate materials need to be safely destroyed for health and safety reasons in normal laboratory waste schemes, it is important to consider what happens to the electrical equipment at the end of life.
We encourage customers to maintain PhysioMimix OOC Systems through Support Contracts to ensure they remain useful for as long as sensibly possible, thereby reducing unnecessary waste.
CN Bio is required by law in much of Europe to provide information and active routes for the recycling of electrical equipment at the end of its useful life. Please see below for details in your country.
However, as a business, our commitment to the environment goes further. For example, we offer support at the end of equipment life for customers in Switzerland, where there is currently no legal recycling requirement by the vendor.
We are keen to encourage customers outside of these regions to recycle waste electrical equipment from CN Bio. In many countries, it is the customer’s responsibility to handle end-of-life and product disposal. If your product has reached the end of its useful life, please review and follow your requirements locally. Guidance may also be reflected in your corporate policies. Recycle following appropriate electrical equipment decontamination (as you would before any service visit) so that we can all help to protect our natural resources.
If you have any questions our support team is happy to provide any information that may assist.
The EU Directive 2002/96/EC of the European Parliament and the EU Council on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (known as the WEEE Directive) came into force across EU Member States on 13th August 2005. The WEEE Directive was further updated by EU Directive 2012/19/EU on WEEE (known as the WEEE ‘Recast’ Directive) which later came into force on 24th July 2012.
The WEEE regulations in the United Kingdom follow similar rules.
The purpose of the WEEE Regulations is to minimise the impact of uncontrolled disposal of electrical and electronic equipment when it reaches end-of-life by requiring producers such as CN-Bio to provide arrangements for collection, treatment, recycling and other forms of recovery of the products they sell in Europe when they become waste.
All products covered by the WEEE Regulations must be appropriately labelled with the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol. This symbol denotes that the product must be collected separately from other waste streams when it reaches end-of-life.
For CN Bio products covered by the WEEE Regulations, and therefore labelled with the crossed-out wheelie bin symbol, please follow the information below in the country you are located to understand how you can send equipment for recycling when it reaches end-of-life.

Switzerland
Switzerland is a European Free Trade Association member but not part of the European Union or European Economic Area. As such, Switzerland has no obligation to follow EU policy nor implement transposing regulations, including those covering the requirements of the EU WEEE Directive.
Instead, extended producer responsibility regulations in Switzerland covering collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of end-of-life devices are covered by the Ordinance on the Return, Take-back and Disposal of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (VREG). The Ordinance came into force on July 1st 1998 and has been followed by several subsequent amendments to expand the scope of products which are covered.
The requirements of VREG are significantly different from the requirements of the EU WEEE Directive. In particular, the scope of products which are covered by ORDEE does not include any of the types of products manufactured and sold by CN Bio. VREG does not place any legal obligations on CN-Bio to provide arrangements for the collection, treatment, recycling and recovery of waste electrical and electronic equipment in Switzerland.
However, CN Bio takes its environmental responsibilities seriously to ensure a high-quality recycling process for our products when they reach end-of-life. CN Bio has concluded a recycling agreement with the European Advanced Recycling Network (EARN Elektroaltgeräte Service GmbH) to provide voluntary arrangements for the correct treatment, recycling and recovery of CN Bio products when they become waste.
As part of this agreement:
- CN Bio will pay for the costs of treatment, recycling and recovery of WEEE for which CN Bio is responsible
- In return, CN Bio requires the end-user customer to arrange and pay for the costs of transport of the WEEE to the EARN recycler in Switzerland
